The Ria Formosa has some problems with the human impact, mostly related to the clam farming and the development of farming areas. This is because the farming areas compete for the space with the marine plants, which have to be destroyed to prepare the areas for the clam farming. And clam farming is the most important economic activity within the Ria. So, it is key to understand to what extent we can remove the marine plants and permit the growth of the clams.
